One of the main advantages of working in construction is excellent job security. There is currently a shortage of skilled workers in the trade, with demand up by around 300% in recent years. Because of this, many companies are looking for new blood to join the industry, and there’s always more houses to build!

As a new scaffolder you can earn a steady income, but over time and with experience, scaffolders can earn up to around £40,000 per year.

Qualifications for Scaffolders

BTECs, NVQs and HNCs are available in a range of disciplines within the construction industry. To start you on your way to becoming a scaffolder, consider a Level 1 certificate in Construction Skills, or a Level 2 certificate in Construction Operations. Alternatively, an apprenticeship is a great way to gain qualifications whilst learning on the job.

Apprenticeships in Scaffolding

An apprenticeship is a great way to make a start in the construction industry as you gain the relevant qualifications necessary, whilst learning and gaining experience on the job. You’ll likely earn a lower wage during your apprenticeship, but you’ll gain invaluable experience and knowledge that you’ll use throughout your entire career.

Generally, you’ll need at least 2-3 GCSEs, including maths and English, and be over the age of 16 to enter into an apprenticeship. Courses usually last around 18 months, and your company will often ask you to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, with your time split between work and education with a relevant training provider.
